Landfill for disposal of building materials or other materials that do not have the potential to contaminate the groundwater, which includes:
EPD approved-construction and demolition debris
Pre-qualified industrial waste
History & Facilities
In operation since 2003, the C and D Industrial Waste landfill receives 200 to 300 tons per day of local waste and 1,200 tons per day of imported waste from nearby industries. The C and D Industrial Waste landfill covers 1,178 acres. Currently 294 acres are permitted to receive waste, providing airspace life expectancy of approximately 50 years. With appropriate permitting, additional airspace will become available. As with the MSW landfill, the C and D Industrial Waste landfill is operated as an enterprise fund without tax monies.
Contrary to what you might expect, the first impression of entering the landfill site is that of a coastal plains nature preserve. Scattered about the site are pristine ponds with cattails, lily pads, and native grasses providing an abundance of insects and small fish for the coastal birds and other creatures, like alligators, that live there. Bald eagles are frequently seen scouting the area for prey.
